In the performance of their duties, the Volunteer Firefighter/EMT places equipment, lays and connects hose; operates high-capacity pumps and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers, safety belts, lines and hooks and uses self-contained breathing apparatus. Foster parents provide safe, loving temporary homes to allow dogs to transition from abandoned to adopted. CBCR covers vet expenses, while foster parents provide love, care, and security.

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member of Spout Springs Emergency Services. SSES is a combination department that has both career and volunteer personnel. Our volunteers staff apparatuses right alongside the career personnel and are an integral part of our response system. This means that we expect a lot from our volunteers, but in return, we provide all training, uniforms, and equipment you need to help protect yourself and the community. You also get the pride of knowing you made a difference in the lives of others. Spout Spring Emergency Services volunteers receive special consideration when full-time positions become available, though there are no guarantees a volunteer will be hired for a career position. If you are interested in applying, please come by Station 1 during business hours, Monday - Friday and pick up an application. Training is conducted weekly and it is mandatory that regular attendance is maintained. In the event regular attendance is not maintained (valid reasons are excused), individuals are subject to removal from the department. All volunteers must comply with SSES policies and procedures (SOGs). The application and clearance process can take a few months, though every effort will be made to determine eligibility as quickly as possible. Join our therapy dog teams to help elementary school students improve their reading skills. Volunteers will work with their dogs to provide a supportive and judgment-free environment for children to practice reading.

Join the trail building crew in partnership with Chatham County Parks & Recreation to help develop and maintain trails in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area. Volunteers will assist in various trail construction and maintenance tasks.

Join the invasive plant removal workdays with State Parks biologists to identify and remove non-native plants using non-motorized hand tools. Volunteers will learn about invasive plants and removal techniques.

Participate in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census and help with the pollinator garden workday by removing invasive plants and planting native species. Volunteers will also capture a snapshot of pollinator activity by tallying insect visits to plants.

Monitor wildlife cameras in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area, downloading images monthly to capture wildlife activity. Volunteers contribute to understanding the secret life of animals through camera footage.

Monitor birdhouses in the Lower Haw River State Natural Area for nesting activity. Volunteers commit to checking the birdhouses every two weeks from February to June, and weekly if there is a nest, reporting their findings.

Participate in organizing and executing fundraising events to support the refuge, engaging with the community to raise awareness and funds.

Conduct virtual home visits to assess the suitability of potential adopters' homes for the cats, ensuring a safe and loving environment.

Assist with weekend guests and prospective adopters, helping to create a welcoming environment and providing information about the cats and the refuge.

Provide transportation for cats to and from veterinary appointments or to their new homes, ensuring their safety and comfort during transit.

Help with the adoption process by providing information to potential adopters and assisting with the necessary paperwork to ensure a smooth adoption experience.
