West Sebring Stations 9 and 10 are a part of Highlands County Fire Rescue. Highlands County Fire Rescue (HCFR) was formed October 2, 2018, by resolution of the Highlands County Board of County Commissioners. The newly formed combination paid/volunteer department consolidated operations of the previous 10 independent volunteer fire companies, under the County system. Further, Highlands County EMS was consolidated into the new HCFR. HCFR is an all-hazards response organization, responding to 911 calls for myriad issues including but not limited to: structure, brush, vehicle, and trash fires; motor vehicle wrecks; shootings, stabbings, and other injuries along with heart attacks, strokes, COVID, and many other illnesses. We also respond to hazardous materials incidents, technical rescue calls, cats in trees, individual life assists, investigations for odors and sounds, along with many other emergency and non-emergency calls for assistance. | Requirements: Requirements: 1. Firefighter Support personnel provide direct support services to the Department and the Department’s personnel individually or as a member of a team. Firefighter Support Members can be utilized in many different roles to support the Department both administratively and in response to fire, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents. Firefighter Support Members do not actively engage in fire suppression, direct rescue operations or other situations that would be considered a direct threat. Firefighters are under the supervision of the department officers and provide direct services, individually and as a member of a team in response to fire, medical, rescue, hazmat, and other incidents. Firefighters are certified by the State of Florida as Firefighter I or Firefighter II. | Requirements: These requirements can be met after being accepted onto the department. Firefighter I (FF-1) - This course is a minimum of 191 hours. The course will meet the Job Performance Requirements (JPR) of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications, (2019 edition). The Hazardous Materials component of the course must meet or exceed NFPA 1072: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Emergency Response Personnel Professional Qualifications (2017 Edition). The course will present the history of the fire service, firefighter safety and health, communications, building construction, the science of fire, PPE, fire extinguishers, ropes and knots, search and rescue, vehicle extrication and technical rescue, ladders, ventilation, water supply, hose handling, fire streams and fire control, salvage and overhaul, and fire and life safety initiatives. Sun 'N Lakes Volunteer Fire Department is actively looking for volunteers to respond to structure fires, brush fires, motor vehicle accidents, and medical calls. We are also looking for volunteers for support positions- paperwork, cleaning, etc. The county will send you to fire school where you will have the opportunity to earn your Fire 1 and Fire 2 certification at the local college. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to serve their community. ALL TRAINING IS FREE- We have weekly training meetings. The county provides quarterly training.
