The Shelburne Fire Department is a professional 100% volunteer organization. We provide essential services to our community including fire suppression, heavy rescue, marine rescue, and hazardous material control, amoung countless other incidents. Joining the department starts with an application. After applying, you’ll undergo an interview, which is also an opportunity to ask questions. At the first Department meeting after the interview, applicants are presented to members, and a one-month waiting period begins. During that time, you’re welcome to attend training and begin meeting members. At the next monthly meeting, your application will be voted on and, if approved, a six-month probationary period begins (though timing varies). At the end of the probationary period, another vote is taken for a status change to full membership. | Requirements: No experience is needed to join the Department. You must possess a positive, "team-player" attitude and be up for a challenge. This is an opportunity to grow as a person! Department training: Held every Thursday from 6:30 to 9:00 pm (except the first Thursday of the month which is reserved for the monthly business meeting). The Shelburne Fire Department provides further training at no cost to the member. Examples include: The Chittenden County Basic Firefighting Course. Firefighter Level I: A modular, State course given at various locations. This course covers all aspects of firefighting and leads to a nationally-recognized certification. There are countless other training opportunities offered by the department! For those who work unusual hours, special arrangements may be made for training. A mentor will be assigned to help you feel welcome and to assist you in training. Commitment: CALLS: It is impossible for every member to make every call. You are required to make a minimum of 10% of all calls. TRAINING: Certain skills must be practiced on a regular basis to meet Federal, State, and Shelburne Fire Department requirements. Volunteers will be responsible for feeding, cleaning enclosures, and providing care for cats and small animals in the shelter. This position is scheduled each morning, seven days a week, from 8 AM to 10 AM.

As a Shelter Help Volunteer, you will assist with laundry, dishes, and general cleaning and organizing of the shelter. This position is crucial for maintaining a clean environment and is needed throughout the day, making it flexible for volunteers.

As a Dog Care Volunteer, you will help with feeding, cleaning kennels, and taking dogs out for bathroom breaks. This is a scheduled position from 8 AM to 10:30 AM, needed seven days a week.

Transport Volunteers are needed to help transport animals to and from their veterinary appointments. Pick-up is at 8:15 AM at HSCC, with return times varying between 1 PM and 4 PM.

Support family caregivers by providing compassionate care to individuals living with dementia. Engage with participants through activities, companionship, or meal service, making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Use your skills to assist residents with home maintenance tasks that enhance their comfort and safety. Tasks may include fixing faucets, painting, and yard work, ensuring our community members can live independently.

Help prepare and serve meals at our assisted-living communities. No experience is required, as meals are pre-planned and staff will provide guidance. Shifts typically last two to three hours, including clean-up, allowing you to connect with our residents.

Transport residents to medical appointments, shopping, and other activities as needed. This role allows you to spend quality time with independent-living residents while fulfilling an essential need in the community.

Assist with various events organized by the Lake Champlain Committee. Responsibilities may include setup, registration, and engaging with participants to promote the organization's mission.

Become a volunteer patroller for the Champlain Aquatic Invasive Monitoring Program (CHAMP). Volunteers will be trained to survey and report on invasive species in Lake Champlain, contributing to the lake's ecological health.

Help maintain and promote the Lake Champlain Paddlers' Trail as a Site Steward. This role involves monitoring the trail, ensuring it remains accessible and safe for users, and engaging with the paddling community.

Join the Lake Champlain Committee's effort to monitor cyanobacteria blooms in Lake Champlain. Volunteers will learn how to recognize blooms and report their findings to help protect the lake's health.

Support the Lake Champlain Committee with administrative tasks in the office. This may include data entry, filing, and assisting with communications and outreach efforts.

As a healthcare volunteer, you will assist our medical staff in providing care to patients, helping with administrative tasks, and ensuring a smooth operation of clinic services. Volunteers are essential in supporting our mission to provide free medical care to those in need.

Assist with forming garden beds, transplanting, planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting. Volunteers will also help in the construction and setup of the aquaponics system.

Participate in the Spring Project Day to help with exterior painting and fence replacement at a home in South Burlington, Vermont. Skilled volunteers are encouraged to bring their tools, while unskilled volunteers can assist with painting and cleaning. Breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided.
