The Volunteer Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (Volunteer FF/EMT) serves the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of Wittenburg Fire Department and perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, and public education. The Volunteer FF/EMT is expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. Kings Creek Fire Dept
Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department is located east of Lenoir NC on Highway 18. The fire district serves approximately 2,800 citizens and responds to approximately 300 calls a year. The fire district is mostly timberland and draws minimal tax revenue annually for the departments operational budget. Due to the nation wide shortage of volunteers and to the fact that most of the departments volunteers work outside of the fire district, Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department must maintain paid staffing during the day time hours. During evenings and nights, Kings Creek Volunteer Fire Department is operated solely by volunteers. Staffing during the daytime hours with only one person, costs nearly one quarter of the annual budget. Aging equipment has also cost the department over $24,000 annually in apparatus maintenance costs. The one newer apparatus has an annual loan payment of $48,000. This leaves very little funding for operations and new equipment purchases.
