As a new Probationary Firefighter, you will begin your training both in house and at a state fire training center to become a fully certified and operational Firefighter. This entry level opportunity is the first step in becoming a certified interior firefighter within our department. Certification classes are paid for by the department at no cost to the member. All Probationary members are expected to rise to the challenge set before you of training and education, but also are strongly encouraged to be involved in all of the other aspects of our organization. Monthly fundraisers, details, and social events are all part of the exciting life as firefighter in our department. Members are paid $7 per call responded to. All training is paid for, basic gear is provided at no cost, along with department uniform. Volunteers for the Furniture Collaborative assist with organizing, preparing, and delivering donated furniture. This program is vital in transforming empty spaces into welcoming homes for families and individuals in need.

Help refurbish and maintain the Songbird Trail by tending to nesting boxes and repairing winter damage. Volunteers monitor the trail and contribute data to support Bluebird population renewal efforts in Connecticut.

Participate in maintaining and enhancing the Edith Morton Chase Ecology Trail. Volunteers help update trail guides and ensure the trail highlights the diverse environments and ecology of Topsmead.

Join a team of trained docents to give tours of the Chase Cottage, supporting DEEP in offering more frequent tours. Volunteers help prepare the house for visitors each spring and close it in late autumn.
