You have taken the first step toward becoming part of an exciting team. You may have ended up here because you have always wondered about being a volunteer firefighter. Or, perhaps you are curious about what it entails to be a member of the department. Over the years a lot has changed in the fire service and with the Guilderland Fire Department. Equipment evolves, training increases and the types of incidents the department responds to has grown quite a bit. One thing that never changes however is the sense of family, community and tradition which is a large part of the fire service. When you join the department, you become part of our family. Our members are a close-knit group of men and women whose primary focus is to work and train hard so that we are ready to help anyone in our community when the need arises. The fire service is very family oriented and the Guilderland Fire Department is no different. Our members families are often invited to picnics, awards dinners, baseball games, day trips, community events etc. In fact, our members are so close that often families even choose to vacation together. If you would like to learn more, we would love to setup a time for you to come visit the station. We can provide you with an overview of the department along with a station tour. Meeting in person will provide us the ability to learn more about you and you’re goals as well as provide us a chance to ensure we can answer all your questions. | Requirements: If you are between the ages of 16 and 65 and are a member of the community in good standing you are eligible for membership in the Guilderland Fire Department. Support Friends of Five Rivers with database management, mailing, and filing.

Provide expertise to one of the three committees: Membership, Finance, and Development & Communications. Volunteers contribute to strategic planning and execution.

Participate in community science programs to collect important wildlife data while spending time outdoors. These programs are managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation’s Five Rivers staff.

Staff the Visitor’s Center reception desk and gift shop for 3.5-hour time slots either in the mornings or afternoons Monday through Saturday. Training is provided.

Support social functions by volunteering at events or providing refreshments or other items as called upon (e.g., Fall Festival, Maples Open Houses, Get Outdoors Day, Tabling events).

Guide ecology lessons for kindergarten through 8th grade students on weekdays. Training is provided, and you can set your own schedule.

Assist with week-long programs in July & August. Students will receive volunteer hours for Honor Society and other club requirements. Must be at least 14 years old.

Visit clients in their homes to provide companionship and social interaction. This role helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness among clients.

Provide transportation services to clients, helping them get to medical appointments, shopping, and other necessary errands. This role is crucial in ensuring clients maintain their independence and access essential services.

Provide respite care for family caregivers by spending time with their loved ones. This allows caregivers to take a break and attend to their own needs.

Support the planning and execution of fundraising events such as galas and golf tournaments, helping to raise funds for the organization's mission.

Assist with office tasks such as filing, data entry, and organizing events. Volunteers support the administrative functions of the organization to ensure smooth operations.

Help with gardening tasks such as weeding and planting to maintain the beauty and health of the arboretum's diverse plant collections. Volunteers will work alongside staff to support the arboretum's horticultural needs.

Assist with maintaining the trails at Pine Hollow Arboretum to ensure they are safe and accessible for visitors. Tasks include clearing debris, repairing paths, and general upkeep of the trail system.

Assist in keeping the visitor center clean and welcoming for guests. Responsibilities include cleaning surfaces, organizing materials, and ensuring the space is tidy and presentable.

People from all walks of life at virtually any age can assist a volunteer department. Of course, we do need people that want to learn to become a fully trained firefighter. Teach Farsi language classes to help preserve and promote the linguistic heritage of the community. Volunteers will conduct classes and provide language support to learners.

Teach IT skills, including software development and testing, to community members. Volunteers will help individuals gain valuable technology skills to improve their career opportunities.
