Applicants must understand the physical demands of being an emergency services provider to the community. Physical demands such as long hours on your feet, hours in hot or cold weather, lifting, bending, climbing and crawling are just a few of the endless demands this type of service puts on its members. Applicants must also understand the mental demands and stress placed on the members of the emergency services profession. You have to be able to function in adverse situations in a quick and efficient manner. Members of the emergency services see things and have to deal with things that the people in the general public have a hard time dealing with. | Requirements: • Minimum of 18 years of age, of mature judgment, clean and neat in appearance • Be of sound physical and mental condition, capable of performing all assigned duties • Must adhere to all requirements, rules and regulations put forth by Washington County Fire Rescue #1 Inc. and the state of Virginia • Washington County Fire Rescue #1 Inc. has a zero tolerance policy on the use of illegal drugs and/or intoxicating substances by its members. ALL MEMBERS are subject to random drug testing. ALL applicants must pass a drug test prior to becoming a probationary member. • Never been convicted to any felony or crime of moral turpitude • All members, both probationary and full-time, are required to pull a minimum of (2) 8 hour duties at the station per month. Full-time members have to option of crediting up to 8 hours from time spent on calls each month in place of a shift pulled. • All members are required to attend 7 business meetings and 7 drill meetings per year. Business meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month and Drill meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month. Both normally begin at 7 pm. • All members are required to check off at least 2 trucks during the 8 hour shift pulled. One of the check offs must be an ambulance. • All members are required to leave a hand written note in the secretary’s mailbox if they are unable to attend a meeting. Work, religion, family or illness are excused absences. • All members are required to have a minimum of 24 hours of fire training per year. • Within one year of joining WCFR, members must be in the process of, or have acquired baseline certifications in either Fire or EMS. This includes Firefighter 1 or EMT-Basic. • All members must hold a current and valid CPR card from the American Heart Association to be on our ambulances. • Members must have a valid EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operator Certificate) card to be considered as a possible driver. • Members must obtain a Hazardous Vehicle and Extrication certificate within the first year of membership. • All members are offered Hepatitis B vaccinations at the expense of Washington County Virginia. If you choose not to take the vaccinations, a waiver form must be signed and placed in your personnel file.
