Volunteer firefighters typically work 24-hour shifts, but are eligible to work in shorter blocks as approved by the Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteer firefighters hired under the SAFER Grant, who meet certain benchmarks and work a minimum of three (3) 24-hour shifts per month, may qualify for educational reimbursement and other benefits as defined in the Volunteer Program Manual. Otherwise, the minimum is two (2) shifts per month. The Volunteer Firefighter is required to attend regularly scheduled training in order to maintain the high level of knowledge, skill and ability necessary to function safely and effectively as a firefighter and EMS provider in accordance with state law, county protocols, and standard operating procedures. Volunteer Firefighters serve the community by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for information or assistance. They perform within the scope of the policies and procedures of the NCFPD and they perform duties in the following general categories: fire suppression, emergency medical aid or rescue, hazardous material responses, training, and public education. The Volunteer Firefighter normally works under the supervision of a Company Officer and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team. They are also expected to perform their duties under adverse conditions and physical conditions that may pose a high risk of personal injury or exposure to hazardous conditions or infectious diseases. Volunteer drivers are needed to transport produce from farms, farmers markets, and orchards to distribution points. This role supports the Market Share and CropSwap programs. Volunteer time is approximately 1.5 hours.

Participate in a Quick Pick or Big Pick to collect citrus or other fruits from local backyards and orchards. Volunteers help gather surplus produce to support feeding partners serving food-insecure San Diegans. Volunteer time is approximately 2.5 hours.

Join the effort to rescue mixed produce from local farmers and grocers. Volunteers collect excess produce from farmers markets and grocery stores, ensuring it reaches those in need. Volunteer time is approximately 1-2 hours, depending on the program.

Participate in an orientation session to learn about volunteering opportunities with Village Encinitas. Volunteers will support seniors in the community through various activities and services.
