Port Allen Fire Dept
The Port Allen Volunteer Fire Department is looking for energetic and motivated Citizens who are willing to serve their community. WE NEED NEW VOLUNTEER MEMBERS, AND WE ARE ASKING THAT YOU CONSIDER GIVING SOMETHING BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY, NAMELY YOUR TIME AND TALENT. We look forward to welcoming you into the oldest fire department in the parish. In fact, the Department has been in existence since 1935. The department was formed because of a lack of fire protection in the City of Port Allen. The residents of the city at the time did not want a repeat of what happened years earlier when the downtown area of Port Allen burned to the ground. Firefighters and fire trucks had to be shuttled across the river from Baton Rouge to put the fire out causing the then Town of Port Allen to have to rebuild from the rubble. For 82 years, our department has served the busiest response area in West Baton Rouge Parish running an average of 1200 calls for service a year. Times have changed since the department first was formed now having paid staff on duty 24/7, to the expansion of the Port Allen Fire response zone to 52 square miles. One thing that hasn’t changed is that our organization serves our citizens by supplementing the workforce of West Baton Rouge Parish Fire District paid personnel on all types of emergencies. In fact, 80 percent of the parish firefighters are a volunteer, which saves the community millions of dollars a year in taxes that they do not have to pay. In addition, because the volunteers compliment the paid department we help keep fire insurance rates in the Port Allen area low. The types of calls that the department responds to range from medical emergencies to large scale incidents, such as the recent eighteen-wheeler wrecks and fires on the interstate. We also regularly respond to structure fires and rescuing trapped people from vehicles. All it takes to join this dedicated team is commitment and a willingness to help your neighbors in their time of need. You can put into it as much time and effort as you want into being a volunteer firefighter. We invite you to attend one of our monthly meetings which are held at 7 pm every first Monday of the Month at Fire Station 31, which is located next to the Family Dollar on LA 1 to learn more about being a volunteer firefighter. | Requirements: • High School Diploma or GED • Valid Louisiana Driver’s License • Reside in Port Allen Fire Sub-District 3 • Clean Criminal History • Drug and Alcohol Free | Categories: Firefighter
