Stewards regularly check the parcel of land they’ve agreed to monitor, reporting on wildlife, overuse, erosion, and unwarranted human activity. They play a crucial role in maintaining the health and safety of the land.

Volunteers are needed to monitor PILP lands, helping to revitalize specific areas by containing invasive species and planting native seedlings. Volunteers also assist with trail work, removing blowdowns and minimizing fire hazards.

Volunteers are needed to help solicit food and financial donations, organize produce, and distribute Thanksgiving baskets to individuals and families in need. This effort involves working with local farmers, community members, and organizations to ensure successful distribution.

The South Portland Fire Department is a progressive ISO Class 1 combination department (staffed both with full time and on call members). We currently have a need for additional Call Firefighters for our two Call Stations. One is the Willard Engine and Ladder Company on Pillsbury Street and the other is the Thornton Heights Engine Company on Union Street. Call Firefighters supplement the on duty crews at large events such as structure fires, hazmat incidents, vehicle extricating, specialized rescues or during large storms. | Requirements: All training required is provided but any previous experience is desired. Must be 18 years old, have a valid Maine drivers license with no significant traffic history or any criminal convictions and have a Diploma or GED. Must complete the Maine BLS Basic Firefighter Course in 12 months. Trained guides conduct tours on-site daily from May through mid-October, including for school children and private groups. Guides are expected to understand the history of the burial ground, learn about the cemetery's 'residents,' and explain gravestone art and symbolism.

Committee members provide research for the Walk Among the Shadows event and recommend speakers for history-themed lectures. The committee is most active during the winter months.

Volunteers maintain shrubbery beds, prune shrubs and small trees, and manage invasive vines. They also work on erosion control by transplanting native grasses. Group workdays are scheduled in spring and summer, with opportunities to work independently.

Board members organize and direct activities and events at the Eastern Cemetery. Volunteers are expected to attend quarterly meetings and contribute to the non-profit's operations. Board experience is a plus, but not required.

Organize and attend protests advocating for animal rights. Volunteers will help coordinate logistics and participate in demonstrations to promote animal welfare legislation.

Contact legislators and testify before the legislature on animal welfare bills. Volunteers will engage in advocacy efforts to support legislative changes benefiting animal rights.

Help on concert days by handing out programs, accepting donations, setting up chairs, and serving treats at intermission. This is an easy way to become part of the 240 Strings family.

Assist with mailings to distribute information and resources about animal welfare. Volunteers will help prepare and send out materials to supporters and the community.

Plan and organize a vegetarian food festival to promote plant-based diets and animal welfare. Volunteers will assist in coordinating vendors, activities, and marketing efforts.

Write articles for the organization's newsletter to inform and engage the community about animal rights issues. Volunteers will conduct research and produce content for publication.
