Tasks may include: • Participating in formal and phased intensive training and instruction sessions. • Participating in department physical fitness program. • Participating in training in order to maintain necessary certifications. Responsible for participating in inspections. Tasks may include: • Inspecting buildings and property for possible fire hazards and compliance with adopted fire code. • Completing annual fire hydrant flow testing and preventive maintenance. Responsible for participating in public education activities. Tasks may include: • Providing fire safety education to public and private schools, daycares, and other locations or organizations as necessary. • Presenting fire station tours to the public when necessary. Responsible for maintenance and repair. Tasks may include • Performing daily routine cleaning and maintenance of all fire apparatus and equipment. • Checking all fire apparatus and equipment daily to ensure it is in good working order. • Returning all equipment to good working order after an emergency response. • Performing daily housekeeping and maintenance of fire station. | Requirements: POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Roles: This position requires the ability to work independently and perform in a team environment on a regular basis. The ability to withstand heavy physical activity, control emotions and actions, and respond quickly and logically during stressful situations. Work Schedule: Consists of staffing a minimum of 12 hours and attending 1 training meeting a month minimum. Subject to call back for assistance with special events. May be called upon to fill positions on a shift to complete minimum staffing levels. Subject to emergency call back. Wears a pager. Impact: Successful completion of work tasks results in increased safety and community satisfaction and efficient utilization of material and equipment. Latitude: Most duties are defined and consistent from day to day. Problem-solving is accomplished in conjunction with supervisor. Decisions are reviewed by others. Must be able to make quick decisions regarding the protection of life and property. Interaction: This position requires frequent face-to-face interaction with employees throughout the organization and the general public. Frequent interaction with outside agencies including municipal, county, state, and federal agencies is also required. Education: • High School Diploma or equivalent, required. Experience: • No experience required. Skills: • Must possess the ability to learn methods, principles, and practices of modern firefighting operation and techniques. • Must possess the ability to learn how to safely operate firefighting vehicles and equipment. • Must possess the ability to meet and deal tactfully with the general public and to communicate effectively and clearly, both orally and in writing. • Must possess the ability to learn how to operate office equipment. Certification/License: • Valid Kansas driver’s license and a good driving record, required. • IFSAC certified Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations, within one year of beginning date of recruit class, required. • EMT certification through State of Kansas Board of EMS (KBEMS) within two years of beginning date of recruit class, required. Physical: • Must have a Volunteer Firefighter Fit for Duty signed by a physician or medical professional. • Must not have any medical condition(s) that can affect a candidate’s ability to safely perform the essential job tasks of a firefighter as outlined in Chapter 6, NFPA 1582. • Must possess the ability to pass the City of Derby Fire and Rescue Strength and Agility testing annually. Must be able to wear face masks. Work Environment: Frequent exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous situations. Frequent carrying, lifting, moving, or pushing of 50 pounds. Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, and twisting. Exposure to human blood and body fluids, heavy machinery, excessive noise, hazardous chemicals, explosives, radiation, confined areas and heights.
